From family counseling to couples therapy, at Two Rivers Counseling, our goal is to provide each and every person who turns to us with professional, personal, and effective counseling. We know that embarking on a journey to find a therapist that suits you can be a different one, but we strive to offer our patients the perfect combination of things that they need to push forward.
As you may have guessed, we are big fans of our patients practicing self care. But what does that mean? Isn’t it different for everyone? What can a person do that is practical and effective to care for themselves? We’ll be taking a look at this question in today’s post, as well as offering some advice on how you can get started. Keep reading to learn more.
3 Elements of Self Care
Set Aside Time for Yourself
Most people lead busy lives. Between making breakfast, packing lunch, working long hours, running errands, and keeping your living space clean, it can feel like most of the time in your day goes to the things that you just have to do.
The truth is that if you can carve out even ten minutes or so to reflect on your day, be thankful for your successes, and clear your mind, you’re setting yourself up nicely. Being able to take some time during the day to spend in whatever way you need in the moment is a great idea and one that everyone should seek to implement.
Discover Your Hobbies
What are your hobbies? When is the last time you dedicated an hour to them? As we mentioned above, it can be hard to find the time, but trust us when we say that if you make time, you’ll be glad you did.
Whether that means taking on a simple woodworking project, seeing a new movie at the theater, or working on a photography project, our hobbies are the things that make us feel alive and connected with ourselves. When you devote your time to a hobby, you’re taking care of yourself in a way that fuels you, revives you, and helps you to grow.
Get Some Sleep
How much sleep do you get in an average night? For some, the responsibilities of the day keep you up because things have to get done. For others, the worries of the day cause you to lay in bed at night, worrying, tossing, and turning.
The truth is that sleep plays an incredibly vital role in our lives. Although, yes, you can get by on not that much sleep, it really starts to have an effect on other aspects of your life. Recent studies even show that inconsistent sleep is almost as bad as constantly not getting enough sleep. On average, a person should try to get at least 8 hours of sleep each night if not slightly more. Try to listen to your body and set yourself up for success with a regular sleep routine.
