Two Rivers
Center for Holistic Counseling and Healing Arts
Youth in Need of Intervention (Y.I.N.I.)
The primary focus of this program is to teach and demonstrate responsibility and accountability with the over reaching goal of instilling a sense of impeccable communication and skillful compassionate action towards others. The foundation of the program is informed by the principles of Aikido and Somatic Psychology.
All sessions are held “on the mat” in a traditional Japanese Dojo (training hall). Participants are not taught skills to fight but are trained through a combination of
- Psychological
- Cognitive
- Emotional
- Relational
- Martial
skills to demonstrate and teach how to get out of the way of conflict and resolve difficult life issues while remaining centered, balanced, and focused. All applications are based in the warrior virtues of:
- Honor
- Loyalty
- Duty
- Sincerity
- Courtesy
- Compassion
- Honesty
- Courage
- Integrity
The program additionally implements a combination of
- Individual consultation
- Family therapy/consultation
- Group counseling
- Education
to support individual and family resolution of conflict and progress toward healthy life choices. Modalities include movement, role-plays, cooperative games, and a light-hearted and often humorous approach to serious life issues. An aspect of the holistic approach includes networking with other community agencies such as schools and churches to build a strong focused team approach to strengthening families.
Families in this program are referred by Flathead County Youth Court Services. The program has been a successful placement option for high-risk youth and their families since 1998 and is a recognized and funded placement option by Department of Corrections and Department of Health and Human Services. Families are requested to make a strong commitment to participation in this program.

Accelerated Leadership Intervention and Support (A.L.I.S.)
Accelerated Leadership Intervention and Support (A.L.I.S.) is a condensed version of the Y.I.N.I. and Resiliency programs developed by Two Rivers. Although parent’s peripheral involvement is always welcomed. A.L.I.S. is designed to focus exclusively on the targeted youth without the participation of parents. It requires 1.5 hour per week with a 16-week commitment on the part of the youth and a sincere desire to change their thinking and behavior by participating in a highly active group format.
More than psychological intervention and cognitive and emotional counseling, this program utilizes consultation and support where needed in the context of an intensive introduction to training in Budo (the way of the warrior). Right thinking and right choices are key to youth getting out of the way of the usual conflicts and the many difficult choices they encounter.
A.L.I.S. offers intensive teachings and trainings on the warrior virtues such as Honor, Integrity, Courage, Polite Courtesy, Compassion, and Wisdom. Through practices called embodiment practices the youth are given opportunities to begin to develop a presence of leadership, confidence, high esteem, the skills to assess their environment and situation, and the tools to make the correct choices to get out of the way, appropriately defend their position, or accept consequences without harm. |
